ABOUT US - Photo PNG POLICE INSPECTOR and Leada 1
Beychief German Shepherds was established in 1972 to develop working dogs. Over the years our dogs have served the community in many ways, fundraising for charity and working with disabled children, in nursing homes and palliative care. Some breeding stock was loaned to the Australian Army to produce Explosive Detection Dogs during the '70s. These lines carried not just Schutzhund titles but titles for FH. During this time Christine trained two Papau New Guinea Police Officers in tracking and bitework. During the next 15 years Beychief produced a number of obedience titled dogs and dogs who went on to receive awards for community service and bravery. This work was all done on a voluntary basis.
Beychief Dogs Have Served The Community
Beychief Kennels' aim is to produce dogs who fulfill Captain Max von Stephanitz dream of a utility working dog. Our breeding animals are x-rayed for hips and elbows and carry the A and Z stamps. Our stud dogs are breed surveyed under the German Shepherd Dog national scheme. In 1990 Christine teamed up with her husband Andrew (Graham) Anderson. Together they continue the dream of producing working dogs.
Graham served in Korea, Vietnam, Malaya and Singapore, the latter three as WO2 in the Military Police. He also worked as Special Constable with Maritime Services Board and owned Rosata Security Services which utilized German Shepherds. It was training of his security dogs that brought Christine and Graham together. The dogs worked at hospitals in the Sydney area. Christine was a professional trainer and tutor of canine body language and behaviour. She travelled extensively overseas visiting Wolf Park and various Guide Dog and Police Dog training centres. Beychief German Shepherd Dog Kennels is the PREFERRED SUPPLIER to NSW CORRECTIVE SERVICES.
Blood lines include the best German and Czech working animals including Border Patrol and Police lines.
BREEDING PROGRAMME
Beychief German Shepherd Dogs has used carefully chosen lines to develop working dogs, especially in days long gone when West German and DDR lines were not in Australia. Our selection has been for character and trainability with marked play/prey drives. Some of the best such lines carry, in our experience, sables (now greys). We study what is behind the dogs. In Germany the adult dogs entering the show ring have working titles. Some of these dogs have wonderful characters and are suitable for producing service type dogs. Others are excellent for providing therapy and obedience dogs. We try to avoid line or in breeding as far as we can.
HEALTH
The German Shepherd Dog, like most breeds, has several potential health issues. These include but are not restricted to-
Elbow Dysplasia and Hip Dysplasia,
Like all breeders of Australian National Kennel Council registered purebred German Shepherd Dogs, we xray our stock. Further, as members of the GSDL our breeding stock is xrayed under the GSDC National Scheme (except for dogs obtained mature and already xrayed previously under the AVA Scheme).
By breeding from animals with "A" and "Z" Stamps or low scores under the AVA Scheme and avoiding too much inbreeding, the chances of puppies developing problems is minimised. However, breeders can do only so much to lessen the chances of genetic/environmental problems happening. It is not possible to guarantee a dog will not develop problems.
Over nutrition and incorrect exercise can cause or worsen a lot of developmental problems, especially too much protein and calories. Shepherd puppies should be kept slim. In purchasing a German Shepherd puppy we advise strongly you go to a breeder who has ANKC registered puppies. Further, the German Shepherd Dog Clubs affilliated with National Council impose restrictions on their members' breeding practices and keep a data base of genetic and other health issues which is advantageous to anybody interested in the breed.
Research the health issues facing the breed (all breeds, including designer ones, have problems, not just the German Shepherd Dog). It is unwise going out to buy "A big one". The German Shepherd Dog has both height and weight limits in the Breed Standard. There is a reason for this. As a working dog oversize limits its agility and frequently the larger the dog the shorter the life span. It is an athlete of the dog world.
STOP PRESS - "EKO the GECKO"
Our new full working line all black dog is going great guns. At Camden Show Society Inc 2010 he took out Baby Puppy In Group. Rare for a black to do well and "ECKO is believed to be the first straight working line GSD in Australia to take out a class in group award. He is also believed to be the first to receive a grading of "PROMISING" in Australia under a German SV Judge, gained at the German Shepherd Dog League Inc Easter Show. Beychief Kennels would like to thank G. Connolly of Hauberk Kennels and Melissa Globits for handling him.

LEGAL
In NSW puppies must be vaccinated and microchipped (even if crossbred) and not leave the breeder until 8 weeks of age. This gives the puppies some protection from canine diseases such as parvo and distemper before going to their new home.
THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG WAS INITIALLY DEVELOPED AS A WORKING DOG
It has served as Messenger, War Dog, Police and Security Dog, Shepherd Dog, Search and Rescue Dog, Guide Dog, Therapy Dog and loyal companion.
The lines we selected were from dogs who displayed the character and trainability we desired and who were not, in our opinion, excessively angulated.
